Anybody care to write a review after seeing the pilot?

JoAnn
Just got done watching it. It was o.k. Would have been better if Chris were in it more. But hey maybe we will get lucky on future eps.

Summary: lame.

Dad is on trial for murdering his girlfriend and then takes family on the run when pics of the kids are taken with red x's on 'em are stuffed through the mailbox. Translation: Dad is provoked into running, because if his trial got started, sensational information about Cassa-whatchamacallit would get revealed and the Evil!Badguys would lose the day.

Or some schmuck somewhere is deliberately pulling Dad's strings because Dad was boffing the hot neighbour, or got the evil Cassa-whatchamacallit off on some legal technicality, and this really chapped Schmuck's ass. Schmuck killed Girlfriend and is now intent on making Dad's life hell. Schmuck has minor league skills as a hacker and borrowed a knife from Dad's kitchen to off Girlfriend with. I'm going with this theory because if Evil!Badguys didn't want the trial to reveal sensational information about Cassa-whatchamacallit they'd just outright shoot Dad and make it look like a suicide.

Basically, this show is about a family on the run and the effects that has on a family. They're trying to keep the family as sympathetic as possible to the audience, so they're on the run for something that they didn't do. They want to appeal to the section of the audience that likes conspiracies, so some unknown entity is persecuting them. They like Tommy Lee Jones as that Marshal who chased down Harrison Ford, so they have a hardnosed female FBI agent searching the countryside for them. Other than that, they're not too particular about the details and how logical the storyline is.

Mom and Dad are absolute twits who should be in prison for not Taking! The! Photographs! To! The! Cops! In! The! First! Place! Heck, no, Dad would rather drag the family along with him as he attempts to elude justice - why he wouldn't just go quietly to prison at this point just to ensure his family is spared the red X I dunno.

Personal peeve is Dad believing that his 'especially untraceable pda' is untraceable.

Twist I'd Like To See But Won't Get To: scene where Dad murders his girlfriend wearing gloves (murder weapon is supposed to have his fingerprint on it). I'd like to see this scene soon because it'd make Dad a rotten s.o.b. and then I'd watch the show to see Dad eventually get his and bemoan the character of a creep who'd put his family through hell because he won't face the consequences of his actions. Right now, there isn't anything on the show that makes me wanna watch it.

Chris as neighbour: weird. There's something off kilter about the character. If this was Silk I'd say Chris was guilty - he's way too damn friendly. Or maybe he's just hoping to get the wife into bed? It ain't like the wife hasn't earnt some 'me' time, and a better haircut fergawdsake.

JPK
Boring with a capital B. Implausible plot with more holes than Great Grandma's ratty old wool sweater.

The wife makes up a story about them being Katrina survivors and everybody buys it. First off, that's an insult to the thousands of people who truly suffered and are survivors. Hated that little "concept." Secondly, it's an insult to the viewers. Oh yeah sure, people show up with lots of cash, a fairly new minivan, a super PDA that *can't be traced* ( is this science fiction?) but no IDs, no school records, no nothing, but hey, they're Katrina *survivors*so it's okay!

I don't like this family. I don't care what happens to them. I hate stories that make the cops look dumb.

Neighbor Bob is dumb/wants to boff the wife/is desperate for a life/is a serious waste of a very good actor.

Thank the gods for technology. It makes it easier to watch CP's few minutes onscreen and skip the rest of the story.

My $0.02 worth of comment,

Jan

Good hair. Funky sweater.

He should have landed the lead on the show, not the nosy neighbor role. What are those casting folks thinking? He'd have been wonderful as the angst-ridden, conflicted father.

Hi! I'm Terry from Montreal, I watched Runaway yesterday. I wasn't that impressed. I'm only going to watch it if Chris is still in it. He should have had the leading role.

It's my first time posting, but I've been reading your posts for years. By the way Janine I love your fanart.

I actually agree on the hair. The sweater made him look like he'd put on 15lbs. - not flattering at all.

As far as the lead in the show, I think the idea was to make it Wahlberg's show and in reality, we're probably lucky Potter's in it at all. But maybe we'll get lucky and the part will grow a bit. Who knows, he could get closer to the wife and get more screentime or figure out what's going on and either help or blackmail them...

Then again, I'm neither writing nor casting it.

I haven't seen the show yet but from the telltale signs here - the show isn't great.

I'm wondering if Chris had the lead role, would his fans like the show more??? or would it be worse - having a lot more Chris but playing a character that no one cares about on a show that people don't like or enjoy....

From pix I've seen, love the hair and I like the yellow jumper as well. biggrin.gif

Hopefully his part will expand and at least it will give his fans a reason to continue watching...

OK Alicia and Jan,
You're tough critics. Tell us how you really feel! dry.gif

I must have been in the right mood last night - I kinda got into the whole story. Way too much poetic license, and way too little CP, but what else is new.
Chris was charming, as usual and the rolleyes.gif hair rolleyes.gif is great - haven't seen that much of it on him since KFTLC ended. tongue.gif

Seriously, I'd rather see him starring in something and I'm looking forward to the LT movie - is it next week or this weekend?

Thought the show was pretty good, though not stellar. Loved the hair and the sweater. smile.gif He was in two scenes and he's got a kid the same age as one of the Runaway's kids. He's also a bit nosy, so there's a chance he'll be on a bit more.

I agree that there's something suspicious about CP's character. He hesitated briefly when he said his name. smile.gif

I just had to post my favorite Firesign Theatre line in their detective spoof "Nick Danger":

There was something fishy about the butler. I think he was a Pisces working for scale.

Yes, that was stupid and stood out as such. Definitely a "Say what?" moment.

I can't think of a television series that I eventually grew to enjoy that had a good pilot, or a pilot where the character development was great from the start. We'll have to wait and see, I suppose.

I agree with you. smile.gif The show is not too bad. Parts of it did leave me wondering what will happen next with the family. Of course, it would have been nice if CP had the lead but Donnie Wahlberg is a good actor. Hoping to see more of Bob as the series progresses. happy.gif

It's a recurring role so we are going to see him more on this show!! But it's just a 13 episode show. You can find this info on cpfan.com on the news page, almost at the bottom of the page.

Thank you for the info. Nathalie smile.gif

Natalie,

That's not entirely accurate. The way US TV networks do things, a new show is usually only given a 13 episode committment at first, so it can prove itself. In a lot of cases, they don't even get to go that far; many being cancelled after less than 4-6 episodes. If the show is successful, they get an order for "the back 9" to round out the "normal" season of 22 episodes.

In the case of RUNAWAY, I suspect that since the CW is a new network, and from what I've read, they may not have a lot of programming in development, there's a possibility that Runaway may stick it out for at least the 13 episodes.

I'm hoping the story lines can gel a bit more and the plot holes get ironed out. The big challenge is going to be when "24" comes on in January in the same time slot.
