That dates back several years, and there are a lot of inside jokes in it that may not be apparent to people who weren't around back then.
Since I'm one of the culprits responsible for that piece, I can offer you some insight into it. When we first started up the CP Chat room some years back, it was a brand new experience for most of the BBS participants. So, it quickly drew their attention, and as people started to chat more, they posted less to the BBS.
But there was one problem. The chat service required relatively new java support, and one of the BBS participants here, named Mimi, had an Apple Mac computer which would not let her into the chat room. Everyday she would desperately download some new software patch, and attempt to log in, and always fail. Then she would go back to the BBS and bemoan how quiet it was lately, and how everyone seemed to have disappeared, and wonder if everyone was having a good time in chat. It got to be a running joke with Mimi and the chat room.
Also, some of the people involved in the chat room were just trying their hand at writing fanfic. They found that using chat as a "writer's brainstorming session" could yield some effective inspiration. They often discussed plots and characters that they were working on, and shared rough drafts of each chapter of their current fanfic for proof-reading and reactions. Although not a fanfic writer myself, I proposed the idea of writing a comedic piece that featured the (then) participants of the CP BBS. Maria and Deb were there and they thought it was a good idea. (Everything bad that I have ever done has been explicitly approved by Maria. Blame her). Maria is the same swedish kid who runs that web site where you read the piece. Deb sort of disappeared over the years. I don't know where she is nor what she is up to. We brainstormed some ideas and we came up with the basic plot that Mimi would be kidnapping the other members because she was jealous that they were all going off to chat without her. And we also thought that it would be amusing to have Chris Potter, and his various characters appear in the story. So after we finished that brainstorming session, I went off and wrote up what you see there, and then I posted it to this BBS. (Mimi loved it). Of course, packrat Maria immediately saved it for posterity. (Does anyone get the impression that archeologists could be kept busy for years just going through Maria's attic?)
Actually, what you see posted on Maria's site is 3 different installments. The original piece ended at the scene where Mimi is carted off to the asylum by Tom Ryan. But then June, one of the BBS members, complained that she wanted to be featured more prominently with Peter Caine, so I wrote and posted a second installment that picked up from there. It ended where she went off with Peter Caine. With June now satisfied, Jule felt that she should also have more Potter to herself, so I added the third installment, with the stipulation that if anyone wanted more Potter, they would have to fight over him themselves.
Some of the inside jokes:
Julie's "claim to fame" was that she once bear-hugged Chris Potter when she met him at some fan gathering.
Monica does those Kung Fu trivia things.
At the time that the fanfic was written, TNT was running Kung Fu every weekday, Monday to Friday. Silk Stalkings was airing on Sunday. That left Saturday as the only day when you could turn on the TV and not see Chris Potter. (Those were the days).
Maria lives in Sweden, and they never showed Silk Stalkings there, so she had to rely upon other BBS participants to send her videotapes.
Carolyn had some problems with the BBS losing messages back then. There was some commotion over a possible "hacker" being involved.
Frank is Chris Potter's character on the episode of "Lonesome Dove" he did. Frank was missing a few fingers. Frank's "sister" was actually not his sister -- she was his scam partner with whom he has "involved".
Megan was a BBS poster who claimed to have an evil twin who actually did post messages here.
I have a thing for Tom Ryan. (Well ok, this isn't much of an inside joke any more).
When Chris's music CD was first released, he personally autographed the first batch of copies. The inscription read; "Dear
, Enjoy. Love, Chris". Mimi ordered one of those, but somehow, she got sent one without the autograph and was a bit upset. So, they had to send her one with a special autograph.
Monica used to dislike talking about Chris Potter's hair and clothes.
Mimi's brothers and husband used to taunt her about her Chris Potter fascination.
Brenda K had this picture of Chris Potter in a blue turtleneck which she treasured.
Jule was notorious for breaking things.
Wolf Gannet is a sub-character that Chris played in Kung Fu. Wolf is a dead-ringer for Peter Caine, except in lots of leather, and a more "punk" hairstyle. Jule and June used to fight over who wanted Peter Caine more, and after I had already written off Peter Caine with June, Jule loudly protested. So, I had to give her a suitable substitute.
