I'd thought it might be fun to play the six degrees game, but reading through the archives, it appears that a lot of the CP long-timers have actually met Chris. (Is that one degree? I'm never sure about that.)

There's a section in these pages for fan encounters, but the link isn't live.

I'd love to read about some encounters, if they're posted somewhere - or if any of you would like to share them here.

Me, the closest I've gotten is three degrees. :-(

Thanks, Monica! These are wonderful stories. I love the pictures too.

I'm one degree removed.

My daughter, Courtney, was doing a summer internship in L.A. last summer and was taken to the L.A. Hockey game and got to meet CP. She was impressed, and it takes a lot to impress Courtney, said he was a "very nice guy."

I went to Jackson Hole this past March. 'Nuff said.

If you aren't already a member of the CPOFC, than may I suggest joining? If you do, you can purchase a copy of the video shot at last year's LA game. At the end of the video, is the Autograph session with CP. ;-)

He was fun, funny and charming and if you can ignore the background noise from the ice rink, it's pretty good. biggrin.gif

If I were to meet Chris Potter, does that mean that I would be one degree of separation from Tom Ryan?

One degree sounds correct. That's about all the heat that guy can generate.

Hey, at least Tom has a degree. He's a sargeant, and he went to college. On the other hand, Peter Caine is a high school dropout.
Alicia (Guest)
No chance; you at least need a high school diploma to become a cop.

But I must admit, after rewatching several Silk episodes, Tom does grow on you. Like mold on a doormat maybe? *eg*

Blaisdell got him the job? Nahhhh. It's Peter who would have to apply and pass the interviews and exams and graduate. And Blaisdell just doesn't seem like the type to coddle, even a foster son.

Now Tom, Tom definitely strikes me as the type who needed help getting into the uniform. Maybe this is why he went to Palm Beach? He flunked outta Boston and moved south!

Didn't Tom play football for Miami? Or was that some fanfic?

(Try not to faint because it appears I'm sticking up for JG. It's just my advanced age. Ask me about NYC!)

well it wasn't fanfic although it may have been mentioned in a couple of fics.

jg help me here. there is at least one episode where this is mentioned. the one i'm thinking of the lady is going blind and doesn't want any sympathy. she shirks off a relationship in fear that sympathy might be at the bottom of it.

and she mentions how see saw him play football at florida.

but then i saw 3 ring circus this morning. as i remember it--there was hardly any tom ryan in it. two clowns from miami :+ :+ :+ :+ :+ , sorry those clowns were for the actors that played these two investigators. not exactly the smartest or most brillant of minds...

i hope i see a better episode this afternoon.

margaret
jg i think i agree with you about chris playing some of the most appealing characters. there is really something about him that makes you want to pay closer attention to his character. more so than anyone else on the screen.

you are a smart man even if you do like "tommy" more than peter or dr david :-)
FoolischGirl
That was the episode Peak experience of the 6th season.

The women remembered Toms name from his college days, when he played football and she had some college football tapes, which she later watched with Tom.

>and she mentions how see saw
>him play football at florida.

I am reminded of the old Doonesbury cartoon (they were actually still in college) in which B.D., who is the football star, is working on a paper he has to turn in the only real class he is taking that semester. He turns to his roommate Mike and asks, "How do you spell ignorant?" Mike replies, "F-o-ot-b-a-l-l s-c-h-o-l-a-r-s-h-i-p." ;-)

Okay, jg, I'm just joking (mostly). Actually, they never specified if I remember correctly whether Tom played for U of Florida or Florida State. Although it used to be that if someone said such-and-such is at Florida, they meant U of F. Both are in northern Florida (I can never remember which one is in Tallahassee because usually people said, "He plays at [insert city]." The other was in Gainesville.)

I don't remember the series ever mentioning what Tom's major was. Did they, jg? But since these were major Deep South schools, football was not something played at. It was serious and most of the football players had majors in things like P.E. or Communications (which was suppose to prepare them to do promo spots and talk shows once they made the majors). A *lot* of them either never finished college or they took 5-6 years on full scholarship to finish. Rarely did they attend classes. It was an enormous scandal at one point, but nothing came of it. Nobody messed with the football players or the coaches or anything else having to do with the football program.

How serious was football in Florida in the days Tom would have attended? Gatorade was initially a top secret development by the U of F science department for the football team! The school later sold the formula for an endowment. That's where the name came from - the University of Florida Gators.

Tom never struck me as particularly dumb, just not especially bright or motivated. But then Peter Caine wasn't going to win any Rhodes Scholarships either. Actually, both of them always struck me as men who worked to play down their inherent intelligence because they were embarrassed by it -- Like a lot of young men you meet who are natural athletes and don't want to seem "smart" around their buddies. I think that was one of the things I really liked about Dr. Dave; CP got to play a character that reflects his intelligence and wasn't ashamed to be bright.

Anyway, that's a little background on Tom's college environment.

In one SS episode Tom wears a hat that says FU on it - supposedly meaning Florida University. Of course it also was probably an in-joke for KFTLC.

And then there are the football players that attend class, earn straight A's and are real Rhodes Scholars like Pat Hayden. Not saying that what Carolyn said was false, but it doesn't apply to all of the students getting educations on sport scholarships. Many football players have continued their education after graduation and become lawyers and doctors while still playing professional football during the season.

I wasn't saying that *all* sports scholarship students are uneducated or ignorant. Simply pointing out though that in Florida during the period of Tom's attendance, the U of F and FSU did *not* recruit, nor concern themselves, with the academic achievements of their players. In fact, they were notorious for discouraging anything *except sports*. And that included discouraging their players from choosing challenging academic majors. That was a part of the scandal. Unfortunately, for most of the Deep South state schools that bit about Forrest Gump getting a college degree by playing football was all too accurate.

In fact, that's why I used the Rhodes Scholarship line, since to receive a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, a student *must* excel in both academics and intercollegiate sports. And there have been some professional athletes (in the major sports) who were Rhodes Scholars (not many grant you and not in a while, but there have been some).

Speaking from Dubya's home state...oops! Sorry! That'd be Maine, now wouldn't it?

Carolyn, I'm SHOCKED. Shocked, I say! Why, we here in Texas have NEVA heard of such a thing! In fact, we insist that all of our collegiate football players take at least seven or eight years to get a four-year degree. Whether it be in Keg Guzzling or Party Rompin', we ensure that each of our young atheletes receive a B.S--- degree before they are put out to pasture...uh, I mean, sent out into the real world.

Really? Something's wrong with doing that? Well, please, please don't tell our Regents. The idea that they might actually have a duty to educate all of their students...what a concept. They might just have to resign their positions at the very thought of it! (Well, we can only hope.)

Jumping in a little late....

I think Tom wore a Seminoles sweatshirt in the episode titled Rage. And the colors on the jersey he had on the wall are the same as the Seminoles, so I assumed he went to Florida State University.

And if I'm not mistaken, in the ep with the female jewel thief, when she went through the stuff in Tom's apartment, didn't she pull out a Seminole's Yearbook?

What episode had him wearing a baseball cap with FU on it? ohmy.gif I missed that one. Does anyone have a screen cap of that? I would almost expect the "standards and practices" people would make sure it said FSU instead.

In Services Rendered Tom played 'decoy' for a Florida University student who was in danger of being shot. I think the fictional F-U was intended as a joke.

Sam Houston State University in Texas *used* to be called Sam Houston Institute of Technology -- then schools started using abbreviations on everything and oops! A change in name was quickly passed by the legislature. :-)

We will not even discuss some of the more abberant rituals of schools like Texas A & M... Gig 'em, Aggies!

Okay, another Tom Ryan fanatic speaking up, here. biggrin.gif According to the series, Tom played for Florida State until he "blew out his shoulder" during his senior year. I don't recall his major ever being mentioned, nor what position he played on the team. The jersey displayed on his wall shows the number 28 on the back, which has led me to collect a couple of FSU jerseys bearing that number, just to have as Tom Ryan keepsakes. tongue.gif Like I said, I'm a fanatic.

As for the fan fic, I made up a bit of Tom's football history in a tale I wrote last year called 'Reunion'. Since the series never gave us much background on Tom and Cassy before their divorce, I invented a scenario of how it might've played out. I'm a sucker for a happy ending, but we already knew Cassy broke his heart in the end. :-(

****Also, Blaisdell would have to be very careful to follow hiring guidelines for a family member......moreso than if he wasn't....

Tom definitely strikes me as the type who needed help getting into the uniform. Maybe this is why he went to Palm Beach? He flunked outta Boston and........

****Well, living in Palm Beach County I can tell you Tom is nothing like the typical Palm Beach Policeman....LOL......the least little thing you do over there on the "Island" and you get pulled over......LOL...just kidding but it does seem that way. My son goes way under the speed limit when he goes over there to the beach.......

Pan,

Met him at a celebrity hockey game - it was a great experience. He was quite cordial to the fans and we (the group) had a great time talking to him, getting autographs, cheering at the game, and getting to know fellow fans too. He really seems to enjoy talking with the fans.

I was lucky to meet the man twice, once in 1999 at a hockey game in Long Island and then in Sept (3 days before the WTC disaster) in manhattan.

Both encounters are on my website http://www.honeybat.com/linda/index.htm

Thanks, you guys. These encounters have been great to read. With these and the incredible tape that Laura sent me, I've been happily pottering away.

So glad it got to you safely and that you are enjoying it.
Linda S. and I have been playing urksome with the Post Office.
I sent her something, it came back to me and now it has not gotten back to her.
And did I mention she lives 25 minutes from me. That damn Hudson River is some crossing.
